Here is a good thing about Mother’s Day. We all have/had one
so we can all celebrate that, if
nothing more.
It needs to be said that there are some absolutely rotten
mothers out there. They are on a continuum from murderous/abusive to merely
unpleasant, and I’m sorry if you got one of those. I think the inclination is
to take it personally – as though the
child’s behavior is what caused their problem.
Which, of course, is not true. They had their own devils and
demons, some of which they passed on to their children like an infectious
disease.
For those of us whose mothers tried very hard to do it
right, Sunday is a day for reflection and a whispered “Thank You” into the
Universe. This mothering thing isn’t easy to do…I am blessed with two sons and
I am thankful for their forgiveness and bad memories each day of my life.
I did try to be the perfect mother. I didn’t succeed – but
then, who does? What I do know is that my sons have been the joy of my life,
and there is nothing else that really matters, after all. (Except for St.
Kenny, who is a different kind of joy and an entirely different category of
gratitude.)
I hope you all have a wonderful day on Sunday. And isn’t it
nice we had mothers who brought us here?
